In the National Silicon-based LED Engineering Technology Research Center of Nanchang University (the "Research Center"), a major technological breakthrough has recently been made for the silicon substrate yellow-light LED (light emitting diode) chips that are independently developed by China, with the chips' electro-optical conversion efficiency reaching 27.8%, an international leading level.
In February 2016, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to the laboratory of the Research Center to learn about the laboratory's technological innovation, talent training, production-education-research combination and other information.
"The General Secretary's visit to our laboratory granted great encouragement to us." The team led by Jiang Fengyi, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice President of Nanchang University, developed the silicon-based blue-light LED technology after 19 years’ effort. This technology breaks the monopoly by the United States and Japan in the field of semiconductor lighting core technologies, while opening up a low-cost and high-quality LED technology route that is more energy-saving and environmentally friendly. Less than 100 days after General Secretary Xi Jinping's visit, he led the team to deliver a major breakthrough in the yellow-light technology, driving China's LED technology to shift from one of "international peers" to one of "international leaders".
In addition, the Research Center integrates the innovative corporate values into the holistic process of disciplinary cultures and talent training, while implementing comprehensive reforms in such aspects as the direction, models and evaluation standards of postgraduate training. By constructing and implementing a new model of "enterprise-based" science-and-education integration for postgraduate cultivation, the Research Center has trained a large host of outstanding inter-disciplinary talents in the field of LED lighting.
